Rhino tracking in Ziwa

To track rhinos, go to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is situated around 180 kilometers north of Kampala by road in the Kafu River Basin of the Kampala-Gulu Highway, close to Nakitoma Village in Nakasongola District. Apart from tracking rhinos, other tourist attractions include bird watching, canoe excursions, and nature hikes. As the project progresses, the sanctuary provides a safe haven where rhino populations can grow through breeding, be shielded from both human and non-human predators, and be progressively reintroduced into Uganda’s national parks.

Meanwhile, the public can continue to enjoy these magnificent animals. At least forty different mammal and reptile species, including crocodiles, antelopes, hippopotamuses, and monkeys, can be found in the sanctuary. In addition to walking with rhinos, other tourist attractions include bird watching, canoe trips, and nature hikes.

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary’s goals and roles

1. To encourage breeding programs to guarantee the long-term survival of restored rhinoceros populations in Uganda;

2. To encourage the reintroduction of rhinoceros to protected areas inside Uganda;
3. To create initiatives in collaboration with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), district administrations, and local communities to safeguard rhinoceros populations against poaching.

4. To educate the public about rhinoceros and their endangered status;

5. To foster national support for the preservation of Uganda’s rhinoceros populations;

6. To organize fundraising events and raise money for the translocation, care, and management of the reintroduced populations.

Enjoy monitoring rhinos at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. NOTE: That a visit to the sanctuary is an essential if you are visiting Murchison Falls National Park.

Birding at Ziwa Sanctuary:

In addition to being a rhino sanctuary, Ziwa Sanctuary is home to 350 different bird species, including the rare shoebill, the White Crested Turaco, the Giant Kingfisher, and the Speckled breasted Woodpecker. You can also go bird-watching by boat or on half-day or full-day guided walks.

Ziwa Nature Walks:

In addition to the sanctuary’s rhino tracking program, the nature walks offer you the chance to see a variety of other animals, including black and white Colobus, ground squirrels, vervet monkeys, oribi, waterbuck, reedbuck, hartebeest, and mongoose. Reptiles also include large monitor lizards, butterflies, and fascinating insects. Additionally, this will be a fantastic opportunity for bird lovers to see various bird species.
